PeterLynn Expands with Xeikon 3030 Installation

PeterLynn Ltd, Corby, has become the latest UK label specialist to invest in Xeikon colour digital printing technology with the purchase of a Xeikon 3030 digital label press. The new purchase coincides with the expansion of the company, which has added the adjacent business unit on the Willowbrook North Industry trading estate. This additional space is now housing the new digital equipment.

Commenting on the timing of the investment, James Lindsay, General Manager of PeterLynn, said: “The digital label printing sector continues to grow, and become an increasingly important part of the label industry as a whole. As a dynamic, growing business, the investment in digital equipment at this point in time made great sense for us, and the physical expansion into a second industrial unit was a necessary addition as space was becoming a limiting factor.”

The Xeikon 3030 digital label press hardware is supported by the installation of a multi-function offline Digicon finishing station, capable of providing hot-foil, varnish, lamination and cold foiling. “The full package of high-speed digital printing and value-added finishing provides an unrivalled suite of the very latest in label creation technology. This equipment will allow us to expand our business into areas of the market that we have not ventured into previously,” added James.

Vicky Waine, Sales & Marketing Manager for PeterLynn, is delighted with the addition of the new digital capability: “The purchase of the Xeikon machine means that we can offer our customers high quality, short-run four-colour labels without incurring expensive plate and set-up costs. This makes it ideal for the shorter run requirements that are becoming more typical of the market, with many customers seeking to reduce their inventory.

“With no minimum order quantity, and free 100% accurate press proofs, digitally printed labels from our Xeikon 3030 digital press offer the ultimate in production speed and flexibility at an affordable price. Digital colour labels are ideal for customers who require high quality labels over multiple designs, or even where the label requires variable data such as serial numbers or barcodes.”

The food safe properties of Xeikon’s QA-I toner product were an obvious attraction of the Belgian manufacturers product. “This aspect alone opens up the door of a number of food manufacturing companies here in Corby,” added Vicky.

Typical applications that are perfect for digital production include labels for pharmaceutical, asset, food, cosmetics, and beauty products, as well as many others. Because of the ability to laminate or varnish as part of the process, digital produced products are ideal for chemical resistant labelling.

Established in 1985 by Peter Lindsay – James’s father – the company manufactures custom roll labels, plain paper labels, laser labels, tickets and tags. It provides a range of products for specific applications, including synthetic label materials, creating quality label, ticket and tag products. Unique products available include write and seal labels, mobile printer labels, high temperature, cryogenic, asset and racking label products.

About the Xeikon 3030

The Xeikon 3030 web-based press has a top speed of 9.6 meters-per-minute of label production per minute. The five-colour engine provides for the four standard process colours plus a choice of spot colour, special security toner for anti-counterfeiting applications, or a one-pass opaque white for the “no label” look on transparent material. The press is capable of handling an unrivalled range of substrates including self-adhesive label stocks, paper, transparent and opaque foils, and paperboard without the need for pre-treatment or pre-coating. The press handles a substrate width of 330mm, and provides for an imaging width of 322mm. The environmentally friendly dry toner electrophotography imaging process enables the use of conventional substrates without the need for coating or pre-treatment. Additionally the toner is compliant with FDA regulations related to indirect food contact and direct food contact in dry food environments.

For job preparation, the Xeikon press is equipped with the truly open, scalable and modular X-800 Digital Front-End (DFE), combining extensive pre-press functionality including a high-speed RIP with impressive variable data printing processing. In addition, the X-800 DFE is designed to deliver the highest print quality level, a practical die marker function and precise step-and-repeat functionality. The system is also equipped to handle complex operations such as sequential numbering and barcodes.

Commenting on the sale of the Xeikon 3030 to PeterLynn Ltd, Filip Weymans, Director Segment Marketing and Business Development Labels and Packaging at Xeikon, said: “We are, of course, delighted that the team at PeterLynn have decided to install a Xeikon solution for their digital label production. We are looking forward to helping them with their 2012 open house event, and to introducing PeterLynn customers and prospects to the potential offered by digital production.”

“The management at PeterLynn recognised the issues with regard to shrinking run-lengths, meaning that digital offers the most economic production solution. The fact that plate production costs are immediately eliminated with digital makes a significant difference to the price of a few thousand full-colour labels.”
